HDMI via USB-C adapter does not work

Topic #107 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Check if the USB-C socket supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt; not every USB-C transmits an image. Check the adapter and cable.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Connector image support

Check USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt support for the specific slot.

    Steps to follow

    1. Write down the exact model of your computer and USB-C adapter.
    2. Find the description of the USB-C slot you are using in the official computer specification and look for DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt video support.
    3. Also check the video transmission in the description of the adapter and cable; the shape of the USB-C connector alone doesn't confirm it.
    4. If the port is only for data or charging, the software setting will not help - choose a supported HDMI/DisplayPort or other documented output.
  2. Comparison of adapter and cable

If the jack is OK, connect directly and try another compatible adapter or HDMI cable.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check that the monitor is turned on and that it is possible to open its own menu with the buttons on the body.
    2. In the monitor's Source/Input menu, select the exact jack that the cable is connected to, such as HDMI 1 or DisplayPort.
    3. Turn off the computer and display, reconnect the cable firmly at both ends, bypassing the dock or hub if possible.
    4. Turn it on and check the image. If not, after disconnecting the power, try another suitable cable and, if you have one, another screen.
  3. Another video output

If USB-C doesn't support video, choose the computer's HDMI or DisplayPort if available.

    Steps to follow

    1. See what video slots your computer and TV or monitor have.
    2. Turn off the devices and connect the correct HDMI or other cable supported by the model; use an adapter that supports the image if necessary.
    3. Press Source/Input on the TV remote and select the socket you connected to, eg HDMI 2.
    4. After turning on the computer, select duplicating or extending in its Display settings. For sound, select the TV separately in the audio output list.

If the problem persists

Plug the adapter directly and try another compatible display or cable. If the port does not support video, use the computer's HDMI/DisplayPort or another solution specified in its specification.
