Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
After creating a new Windows profile, the old files do not automatically appear on the new desktop. They can remain in the previous user's folder or in OneDrive. Do not rush to delete the old profile or turn off synchronization.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Searching old user folders
First, look for the data locally.
Steps to follow
- Open C:\Users in File Explorer and find the old user folder by its name and contents.
- Check Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Downloads and similar OneDrive subfolders.
- Copy, not cut, the required files to the new user's appropriate folders or to a backup drive.
- Open important documents and photos and verify that they are real files and not inaccessible links.
Verifying OneDrive content
Suitable if the folders were synced to the cloud.
Steps to follow
- Log in on the official OneDrive website with the same account that was used in the old profile; do not send your account password to anyone.
- Check the contents of the Desktop, Documents and Recycle Bin. Make sure you're not viewing another personal or work account.
- In the OneDrive app for your new profile, sign in with the correct account and wait for the necessary files to download.
- Only with a verified local or other backup, decide on the removal of the old profile and changes to the folder synchronization.
If the problem persists
If the files are encrypted with the previous user's EFS key, admin rights alone will not restore them. If it's cloud-only bookmarks, you need a legitimate corresponding account and download. Keep the old profile until the full copy is verified.
