Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
System Settings > Users & Groups (or Login Password) > Change Password. If you forgot your password, use Apple's official recovery options.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Changing a known password
After logging in, change the local password via Login Password or Users & Groups depending on the version of macOS.
Steps to follow
- Click on the Apple icon in the top left and select System Settings.
- Select Users & Groups.
- Open your account information and password change; some versions have a separate Login Password section.
- Enter the known old and new password, confirm.
- Lock the screen and check the new login; this is not an Apple Account password change.
Recovering a forgotten password
If you don't know the old one, use the official Apple recovery procedure; old key data may remain inaccessible.
Steps to follow
- In the login window, look for the forgotten password recovery option; follow the official guide only.
- If prompted, confirm with your Apple Account or FileVault recovery. If not, open Recovery and Apple's official password recovery guide according to your Mac type.
- Enter the new password only in the step provided by the wizard, without showing the key or verification codes.
- If you don't have a recovery method, don't enable disk erase. Not knowing the old password can limit the data of the old key.
If the problem persists
Separate your Mac login password from your Apple Account password. Recovering a forgotten local password may require a new login key; Do not delete previous key data without assessing the consequences.
