How to take a screenshot on a MacBook?

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Command+Shift+3 captures the entire screen, Command+Shift+4 captures a selected area, Command+Shift+5 opens capture and video capture tools.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Full screen photo

Use Command+Shift+3 to capture the entire screen.

    Steps to follow

    1. Open the desired screen and press Command, Shift and 3 together.
    2. Wait for the copy to be created and find it as usual on the desktop or in a capture location of your choice.
    3. Open the file and check the contents; after recording sensitive data, do not post it publicly.
  2. A photo of the selected area

Command+Shift+4 select the area you want.

    Steps to follow

    1. Press Command, Shift and 4 together.
    2. When the cursor changes, use the mouse to define the area; it is locked when released.
    3. Open the created file and verify that the scope is correct. Esc cancels the selection before locking.
  3. Capture tool menu

Command+Shift+5 to check additional options and save location.

    Steps to follow

    1. Command+Shift+5 open the capture bar.
    2. Select a snapshot of the entire screen, window, or area, not recording. Choose a save location in Options.
    3. Click Capture and check the file in that location.

If the problem persists

In the Options tool, check the save folder and that the key combination has not been taken by another program. Protected video content may remain black; it's not necessarily a screenshot glitch.
