Some of the SATA drives disappeared when the M.2 drive was installed

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

On some motherboards, the M.2 slot shares lines with specific SATA slots. Installing M.2 disables some of the SATA connectors by design. This does not necessarily mean that the SATA drive has failed or lost files.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Line division table

Check the manual for the exact board model.

    Steps to follow

    1. Make a note of which M.2 slot the new drive is inserted into, such as M2_1 or M2_2.
    2. Look for "Storage", "Shared bandwidth" or "SATA / M.2" notes in the manufacturer's manual.
    3. Check which SATA numbers are disabled specifically with your M.2 drive type.
    4. Compare with the slot where the missing drive is connected. If it is shared, select the independent socket specified in the manual.
  2. Relocating the SATA cable

Suitable for a separate drive when the correct slot is known.

    Steps to follow

    1. Turn off the computer and disconnect the power. Take a picture of your current cabling.
    2. Move the data cable only to the free SATA slot specified in the manual. The drive's power cable must remain firmly connected.
    3. Power on and first BIOS check if the drive is detected.
    4. Open files in Windows. If the system offers to initialize or format a previously used drive, refuse and check data security.

If the problem persists

If the drive is not visible in the independent SATA slot, check the power and data cables and the condition of the drive. If RAID is used, do not change cables or controller mode without checking the array documentation and having a copy.
