The video card does not work through a PCIe riser, but works directly

Topic #341 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

The PCIe riser is an intermediate cable between the card slot and the video card. If a direct attached GPU works, first check the quality of the riser, the connection and the supported PCIe generation, instead of rewriting Windows.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Direct connection comparison

Remove the intermediate cable from the circuit.

    Steps to follow

    1. Turn off the computer, disconnect the power supply, and remove the riser connector according to the case and board instructions.
    2. If it fits and you know how to install safely, install the GPU directly into the recommended PCIe slot and connect the power to it.
    3. Connect the monitor cable to the GPU, not randomly to the video socket of the board.
    4. Check the launch and the same program. If running directly, record this result before returning the riser.
  2. Checking Riser Specification

A temporary slower mode may help the diagnosis.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check the supported PCIe generation and cable model from the riser packaging or the manufacturer's page.
    2. If using a faster GPU and card than the riser allows, refer to the card's manual for the PCIe speed option for the specific slot.
    3. In direct connection operation, it is possible to set the mode supported by the riser according to the manual, then turn it off and only then connect it.
    4. If it works only in slower mode or is unstable, choose the right riser. Don't mistake constant disconnection as "normal" cable behavior.

If the problem persists

If the GPU works stably directly but not through the riser, replace it with a model of the correct specification. Do not connect or disconnect the PCIe cable while the computer is on. If it doesn't work directly, a more extensive GPU and power check is required.
