The graphics card only produces an image in the lower PCIe slot

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

If the graphics card only works in the lower PCIe slot, the problem may be with the contact of the upper slot, the line configuration or the CPU circuit. The bottom slot may be slower, but its performance is good for comparison.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Direct installation inspection

Eliminate the influence of the cable and assembly.

    Steps to follow

    1. Turn off and disconnect the power. Check the manual for which slot is recommended per GPU.
    2. If a riser is used, try directly. Make sure the board is fully seated and the chassis bracket does not lift it out of the slot.
    3. Check all GPU power plugs and the monitor connection to the GPU itself.
    4. Compare the result of the upper and lower slots by turning the power off and on before each transfer.
  2. Configuration and second GPU test

Narrow down which part is at fault.

    Steps to follow

    1. Check the board manual for slot sharing with M.2 and processor model restrictions.
    2. If you have a suitable known working GPU, compare it in the top slot. Do not install a more powerful GPU if the power supply does not fit it.
    3. If two different GPUs do not work in the same slot, record this result.
    4. Provide the board model, CPU model and all tested combinations to the service; A Windows reset is not required before this check.

If the problem persists

If a known working GPU does not work in the upper slot, and the manual does not provide for disabling it, diagnostics of the socket, board and CPU contacts are required. Do not scratch the PCIe slot or try to repair it with a metal tool.
