Windows – common problems and fixes

Windows Setup cannot find the SSD (Intel VMD/RST)

Topic #087 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

First, check if the SSD is visible in BIOS. If it is visible, but the Windows installation wizard does not find it, download the Intel RST/VMD installation driver from the specific computer manufacturer's page, unzip to USB and select Load Driver. Do not change the RAID/VMD/AHCI mode of an already installed system before you are ready - it may not start. Save existing files before installation.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Loading the storage manager

If BIOS sees the SSD, load the unpacked RST/VMD driver provided by the model manufacturer in the installation wizard.

    Steps to follow

    1. Enter the exact model and select the Intel RST/VMD storage driver for your Windows installation on the computer manufacturer's support page.
    2. Download and extract according to the manufacturer's instructions so that the USB stick contains the driver files, not just the installer .exe.
    3. In the Windows installation disk selection window, click "Load driver", specify the USB folder and run the wizard.
    4. Check if the SSD appeared. Do not delete existing partitions or change RAID/VMD mode blindly; take care of the data first.
  2. Hardware detection diagnostics

If the SSD is not visible and BIOS, examine the drive and connector; the installer won't fix it.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save important files if your computer or drive is stable. If it makes unusual noises, smells like burning or the battery is swollen, stop testing.
    2. Write down the exact pattern of when the problem started and what action it took to reoccur. Take a picture of the visible error or deformation without opening the case.
    3. Submit a repair request with this information.

If the problem persists

Download the specific RST/VMD installation driver for your model from the manufacturer's page, unzip it to a USB and select Load Driver in the installation window. If the SSD is not visible and BIOS, the driver alone will not be enough.
