The DRAM light stays on during the first AM5 startup

Topic #329 · Updated · Pataisoma.lt

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

An AM5 system with DDR5 can run memory training for a longer time after the first time or after changing the memory settings. The DRAM indicator is lit, but this is not necessarily a fault. The exact normal duration depends on the board and RAM configuration.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Let the memory training end

Do not rush to cancel the first launch.

    Steps to follow

    1. In the board manual, find the meaning of the DRAM indicator and the explanation of the DDR5 first boot.
    2. Turn it on once and wait for the time specified in the instructions if there is no burning smell or other signs of failure. There is no universal time for all plates.
    3. If the system reboots itself several times, record the progress and do not touch power while the documented training is in progress.
    4. After booting, open BIOS and check the amount of RAM detected. Consider additional profiles only after a stable system launch.
  2. Single module test

Suitable if the training is not completed or the RAM has just been replaced.

    Steps to follow

    1. Turn off the computer, disconnect the power cable and follow the method of working with the RAM specified in the board's manual.
    2. Leave one module in the manufacturer's recommended single module slot, often A2, but check your manual.
    3. Run with standard memory settings and let training finish again.
    4. If one module is working, check the other one in the same slot. Record the result for each combination.

If the problem persists

If the training provided by the manufacturer does not complete, please provide the board model, BIOS version, full RAM kit code and indicator states. If you do not have experience working inside the case, entrust the testing of the modules to the service.
