Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Disconnect unnecessary accessories and wait if the update is in progress. Check Safe Mode according to Apple silicon or Intel instruction. Run System Disk First Aid from Recovery by selecting Show All Devices: Check volumes, container, and device in Apple's order. If the disk disappears or there is no copy, first evaluate the data preservation.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Launching without accessories
Disconnect non-essential devices and wait if the update is still in progress.
Steps to follow
- Save your work and choose Shut Down from the Apple menu. If an update is in progress, do not interrupt it.
- Disconnect unnecessary docks, USB drives and accessories; leave the necessary power and control.
- Turn on your Mac and repeat the step that didn't work.
- If it worked, return the accessories one at a time and check each time. When you find a related accessory, check its compatibility or contact the supplier.
Safe Mode
Boot into Safe Mode by Mac type and check for new logins.
Steps to follow
- About This Mac check whether it shows Chip (Apple silicon) or Intel Processor.
- Apple silicon: After shutdown, hold power to options, select drive and Shift > Continue in Safe Mode. Intel: Hold Shift while powering up.
- Compare the problem when you're online. If stable, check for a recently added app or login.
- Check General > Software Update and programs; keep a copy before a major upgrade. A normal reboot will exit Safe Mode.
First Aid from Recovery
With a copy, check the system disk from Recovery; data is prioritized for an unstable disk.
Steps to follow
- Save a copy before editing; an unstable or undetectable drive requires data evaluation first.
- Open the appropriate Recovery and Disk Utility > View > Show All Devices for your model.
- In Apple's order, start with volumes, then containers, and finally the device itself, choosing First Aid > Run for each. Enter the key only if you need a legitimate unlock.
- Write down the result and reload. If it doesn't fix or the drive disappears, don't press Erase to save the files.
If the problem persists
If Safe Mode starts, check for new login items and system extensions. Run First Aid for the system disk from Recovery; if the drive is unstable, save the data before repairing.
