Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

First, determine the type of Mac. After turning off the Apple silicon, hold down the power button until the startup options, then Options > Continue. Immediately after turning on an Intel Mac, hold Command+R; failing that Apple's instruction is Option+Command+R for online recovery. These are different procedures; Do not use Intel key combinations on Apple silicon. Take care of the network and data to unlock the encrypted drive.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Apple silicon boot options

With your Mac off, hold down the Power button until Options, then Continue.

    Steps to follow

    1. Completely turn off the Apple silicon Mac.
    2. Hold the Power/Touch ID button until the boot options appear.
    3. Select Options > Continue and, if prompted, legally unlock your account.
    4. In the Recovery window, select only the scheduled check; don't press Erase on a drive just because of a failure.
  2. Intel Native Recovery

    Steps to follow

    1. Shut down your Intel Mac completely.
    2. Turn it on and immediately hold Command and R until the Apple logo or recovery appears.
    3. Select the network and your user, if the wizard asks, enter the valid unlock information.
    4. If it does not start, use the model's online Recovery method; this is not an apple silicon key combination.
  3. Intel Online Recovery

If local doesn't start, try Option+Command+R with network as per Apple's instructions; it is not a combination of apple silicon.

    Steps to follow

    1. Apply only to Intel Macs, according to the official instructions for the model. Connect to stable internet and power.
    2. Hold Option, Command, and R while booting up to the online recovery view.
    3. Select your network and wait for recovery tools. If there is an error, write down the code.
    4. Do not erase the drive as a solution to the connection error; This combination is not suitable for the Apple silicon model.

If the problem persists

On the Intel model, following Apple's instructions, you can try online Recovery with Option+Command+R. This combination is not suitable for Apple silicon models; if the boot options do not open, model recovery diagnostics are required.
