Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
Check that you have permission and that the file is not blocked. Do not change the permissions of the entire drive or the owner without realizing the consequences.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Account and rights verification
Log in with the correct account and check if you have permission to access a particular file.
Steps to follow
- Check who owns the file and that you're logged in to the correct account.
- If the file was shared by someone else, request access specifically to your account, not to a public remediation site.
- For your file, right-click > Properties > Security to view the permissions without changing them. If access is restricted by the organization, report the error to the administrator; do not overwrite the permissions of the entire disk.
Cloud or encryption verification
If it's an online file only, check the connection; an encrypted file needs its key, not a full disk permissions change.
Steps to follow
- If the file has a cloud symbol, connect to the Internet and the correct cloud account.
- Try downloading a copy of the file from your service's website.
- If it's encrypted, check for a legitimate unlock key or certificate; a normal change of permissions does not remove the encryption.
- If you don't have the key, contact the file owner or administrator without formatting the media.
If the problem persists
Verify that the file is accessible by logging in to the correct account and that it is not a cloud reservation. An encrypted file requires its key; changing permissions does not remove encryption.
