Chrome uses a lot of RAM

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

View tabs and extensions in Chrome Task Manager (Shift+Esc); reduce the number of open tabs and try Memory Saver.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Minimizing tabs and extensions

Compare activity and close unnecessary tabs and extensions in Chrome Task Manager.

    Steps to follow

    1. In Chrome, press Shift and Esc to open its Task Manager.
    2. Sort by memory and determine which tab or extension is using it.
    3. Close the recognized unnecessary tab or disable the related extension in Chrome Extensions > Manage Extensions.
    4. Compare usage and system response; just a high number without a crash is not a fault.
  2. Memory Saver

Try Chrome Memory Saver if your version of the app offers it.

    Steps to follow

    1. Select Settings from the Chrome menu with three dots.
    2. Open Performance, if your version has it, and the Memory Saver option.
    3. Enable the suggested mode and try it with multiple tabs. Remove required active sites only if their functionality requires it.
  3. Checking the growing application

If one tab or process keeps growing, refresh your browser and check that site or extension.

    Steps to follow

    1. In Chrome's Task Manager, monitor the same process for a few minutes to see if the usage keeps increasing.
    2. Close only the relevant tab and reopen it, saving your work there.
    3. Chrome Help > About Google Chrome check for an official update; check the extensions one by one. If the problem is only on one site, report it to the site manager.

If the problem persists

Try a browser without unnecessary extensions and check which tab grows. High RAM usage is not in itself a fault if the system is running smoothly; also assess overall memory pressure.
