Windows – common problems and fixes

BitLocker requests the key on every startup

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

A persistent request for the BitLocker key may indicate a recurring charge measurement change. After entering the correct key, it is worth checking BIOS, TPM status and boot order. Encryption itself should not be disabled just to hide the reason.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Ensuring access and key copy

Do a restore before changing anything.

    Steps to follow

    1. Find the exact key by display ID and log into Windows.
    2. Store a copy of the recovery key in a secure location other than the same encrypted drive.
    3. Note if the problem started after BIOS update, TPM change, disk move or dock connection.
    4. Unplug any non-essential bootable USB and check for one normal boot. Do not remove enterprise security add-ons.
  2. Checking for a stable boot configuration

Make changes only after understanding their purpose.

    Steps to follow

    1. BIOS first check that Windows Boot Manager is correct and that dates and other settings are not saved.
    2. If the BIOS settings keep disappearing, first solve the power or RTC problem.
    3. For planned BIOS replacement, please use the manufacturer's official BitLocker protection temporary stop procedure with the key.
    4. Once done, check that the protection is active again. If the key is still requested every time, pass event and change information to diagnostics.

If the problem persists

If the request remains with a stable official configuration, TPM and boot diagnostics are required. Stopping or updating protections on an organization's device must be done by an administrator. Clearing the TPM may delete other stored login keys.
