Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
For some ThinkPad T480s and T480s Thunderbolt issues are related to controller firmware. Similar symptoms can also be caused by a cable, dock, or damaged USB-C socket, so the model name alone cannot determine the fault.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
Checking the socket and accessories
Start with external connections.
Steps to follow
- Find the exact model and Type number on the bottom of your computer or Lenovo Vantage. Don't confuse it with the similar looking T490 or other model.
- Unplug the dock and any USB-C accessories. Please check with a suitable charger and a known working cable directly.
- Write down which slot is used for charging, USB data and external display separately. These functions may fail at the same time.
- In Windows, right-click Start > Device Manager and check for Thunderbolt driver or unknown device.
Official updates from Lenovo
Only update packages for your model when the system is on stable power.
Steps to follow
- Go to the Lenovo support page and select the exact computer and its operating system according to the "Type" number.
- Read the model Thunderbolt software and firmware package requirements and the specified installation order.
- If the controller is detected and the power is reliable, perform only the update authorized by the manufacturer. Do not turn off the power during it.
- Reboot the computer and try the same sockets again. If the tool does not find the controller, stop and call for diagnostics.
If the problem persists
If the Thunderbolt controller is not found by the official update tool or diagnostics, do not try random firmware or EEPROM rewrite instructions. Provide the service with the exact "Type" number, non-working sockets and a list of tests already performed.
