Practical guidelines for RAM
- 4 GB is the technical minimum for Windows 11, but modern browsers and applications quickly run out of this amount.
- 8 GB - documents, email mail, few browser cards and simple learning tasks.
- 16 GB - comfortable daily work, more cards, office programs and a good number of games.
- 32 GB - more complex photo or video processing, programming, use of several demanding programs, virtual machines.
- 64 GB and above – Large 3D, video, engineering projects, large datasets or multiple virtual environments.
Microsoft specifies 4GB as the minimum for a Windows 11 installation, but the needs of individual programs may exceed this. Windows 11 requirements.
Signs that RAM may be low
These signs are not definitive proof: a slow drive, background program or overheating can also occur.
- During normal operation, memory usage is constantly approaching the limit.
- Long pauses are felt when switching programs.
- The browser reloads previously opened tabs.
- Large projects do not open or the program warns about memory.
- The disk is intensively used at a time when RAM is low.
What is safe to check?
- Open Task Manager under Performance → Memory.
- Monitor usage while doing your normal work, not immediately after starting the computer.
- Check the exact model of the computer, the type of RAM, the maximum amount supported and whether the memory is soldered.
- Check if the integrated video card is sharing the system memory.
- Before purchasing a module, check the DDR generation, physical format, frequency and layout of existing modules.
When is diagnostics necessary?
Diagnostics is useful when your computer shows memory errors, blue screens, won't start after changing RAM, or it's not clear whether the slowdown is due to a lack of memory. Some laptops have RAM soldered in and cannot be upgraded without replacing the motherboard.
Important - what not to do: Modules of different generations of DDR are physically and electrically incompatible - they cannot be inserted by force. Do not install RAM in a connected device or disassemble a model with an internal battery without the manufacturer's procedure. Don't use RAM cleaner programs or disable Windows virtual memory in hopes of speeding things up.

Frequently asked questions
Is 4GB of RAM enough for Windows 11?
This is the official technical minimum, but it does not mean comfortable work. Running a browser and several applications can quickly deplete memory.
Does more RAM always make a computer faster?
No. Extra RAM helps when you really need it. If the CPU, storage, temperature or application are limiting, increasing the memory alone will not solve the problem.
Can different RAM modules be mixed?
Sometimes they run at a lower overall speed, but compatibility is not guaranteed. It is more reliable to use modules with parameters supported by the manufacturer and compatible with each other.
