How to safely remove a USB stick?

Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Close the files you are using, then select Safely Remove Hardware in the notification area or Eject in File Explorer.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Safe device removal

After closing the files, select Safely Remove Hardware or Eject.

    Steps to follow

    1. Finish copying files and close the documents from the USB drive.
    2. Open the hidden icons near the Windows clock and select Safely Remove Hardware; available in the File Explorer by right-clicking on the media > Eject.
    3. Select the exact device and wait for permission to disconnect. If it's busy, don't pull it out while writing.
  2. Shutting down the computer

If the device is constantly busy and the reason is unclear, save your work and shut down the computer normally before disconnecting.

    Steps to follow

    1. Save changes to all open documents.
    2. In the Start menu, select the power button and the normal "Shut down"; file lock can be "Restarted".
    3. If an update is in progress, do not interrupt it. Wait for the system to complete the operation.
    4. Disconnect the USB drive only when the computer is turned off; after reboot check if the file is no longer locked. Don't use Force Shutdown as the first step.

If the problem persists

If the system reports that the device is in use, close its files, applications, and copy windows. Don't pull away as you write; if the reason for use is not clear, turn off the computer safely.
