Troubleshooting guide
How to fix the problem
In Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Default apps, select an installed browser, and use the set as default option if it's available. Check HTTP, HTTPS and .html assignments. In Windows 10, the browser can be selected in the general section of Default programs. Some apps open their own shortcuts based on a separate setting.
Possible solutions
Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.
General browser setting
In Default Programs, select the browser you want as your default.
Steps to follow
- Press the Windows logo key and I together on your keyboard to open Settings.
- Select "Applications".
- Select "Default Apps".
- Find and open the browser you want installed.
- Click "Set as default" if provided. In Windows 10, you may just need to select "Web Browser".
- Open a normal web link and check which program launched it.
Assignment of individual protocols
If some of the links still open elsewhere, check the HTTP, HTTPS and .html assignments.
Steps to follow
- Press the Windows logo key and I together on your keyboard to open Settings.
- Select "Applications".
- Select "Default Apps".
- Find HTTP, HTTPS or .html assignment in the search and select the desired browser.
- Change only these assignments, not all application types.
- Check the link; if a particular program opens elsewhere, see its own selection.
If the problem persists
If the links still open in another application, check the HTTP, HTTPS, and .html assignments. A specific application may have its own browser preference, which is not changed by the Windows global setting.
