Troubleshooting guide

How to fix the problem

Use brightness keys or System Settings > Displays; an external monitor may need its own controls.

Possible solutions

Choose the method that matches your situation. Start with the simplest suitable option and check the result. If the problem is fixed, you do not need to continue with the other methods.

  1. Brightness control for Mac

For the internal display, use the brightness keys or System Settings > Displays.

    Steps to follow

    1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left and select System Settings.
    2. Select "Displays".
    3. Select the internal display, if there are multiple displays, and slide the Brightness.
    4. If the brightness changes again, check the auto-brightness option; alternatively use the pattern keys with the sun symbol.
    5. Compare the image without changing the external display controls.
  2. External monitor controller

If the brightness of the external display is not controlled on the Mac, use its menu if supported.

    Steps to follow

    1. Use the buttons on the monitor body to open its own menu.
    2. Look for Brightness and change it in small steps.
    3. Check the result; if the function is locked due to HDR or other mode, follow the specific guide without changing the options blindly.
    4. A Mac or Windows slider doesn't necessarily control an external display; software control requires monitor support.

If the problem persists

Check the auto-brightness setting and separate the internal display from the external display. If the external brightness is not changed by macOS, use the monitor controls according to its support.
